#####################
NEWSLETTER #1, 6/7/96
#####################

Greetings. This is the first electronic newsletter of the
mac-warez-site-without-a-particularly-cool-name-until-I-happen-to-think-of-one.
As some of you have noticed, we've gone to password protection already,
mainly because I was worried about random search engines picking up the
site. The current username you should now log in as is "warez", the
password is "gimmie1" Please don't upload any more files into the
anonymous site's incoming directory, although if you've done that
already today, I'll just move them.

If you're getting this message, then you're on the members list. My
apologies if I haven't informed you previously. There are currently 33
people participating, and I'll probably freeze it around 40. This may
seem like a lot, but I know that several people aren't going to be
participating as much as others. We're still on the same machine; a
Silicon Graphics 133Mhz Indy, and it should easily be able to take the
load. Also, I figure the longer I leave the membership list open, the
greater the chances of a Fed noticing, which would be bad. I feel
reasonable secure about the people currently participating, but don't
worry, I'm not giving out anyone's name to anyone else.

Thanks to everyone who's been uploading! The collection is growing in
size & diversity quite nicely. I've added a "requests" directory due
to... err.. requests. You know the drill: post a file in there with a
name like "REQUEST: Photoshop 3.5" and then delete the file again if
someone decides to grant your wish.

Speaking of which, if your upload breaks partway through, you CAN log
back in and delete the corrupted file from the /incoming directory. It's
write-enabled, obviously.

Ummm... I think that's about it. My thanks to people who have been
notifying me of problem files, files in the wrong places, etc. And
thanks to those people who have (1) Notified me when they've uploaded
something, and (2) Given me a description of it for the "descriptive
index" which should be appearing sometime next week. Many thanks to Sir
Lurch who's been writing me some descriptions for stuff that's already
on the site -- anyone else want to contribute? I'll use any and all
comments you want to give me on anything that's there.

Oh, incidentally, while I'm working on the index, you might want to
peruse the categories & check out what's currently there before you
upload. We've been getting a lot of duplicates lately for some reason.

For anything else, either email me back, or -- please -- read the README
file which should appear as you log in, and is in the root directory. I
modify it constantly, with all the latest information I have at my
disposal.

Thanks, folks.

Shallot

Hello, members. Those of you who have been on recently have noticed that
my ftp site now has a name. It's a pretty stupid name, but as somebody
pointed out to me, if it was a cool name, people might be tempted to
brag about belonging to it.

The reason for these newsletters is twofold: (1) I want to make sure
I've got everybody's email address in my mailing list who can gain
access to the site, and (2) To inform you of major updates to the site.
I promise not to send them out too often.

There are currently about 60 members, and the site seems to be holding
up well. I haven't received any complaints or comments about slower
connections yet. I intended to freeze the members list at about 50, but
couldn't resist letting in a few more people with long lists and a great
willingness to upload. I may or may not continue to do this, depending
on whether the flow of new files into the /incoming directory stays as
steady as it has been, or whether it begins to drop off as the novelty
of a new site fades. Please, keep uploading! I have a number of plans
for the future & would like you to be a part of them.

First, a couple of small changes. Now that the site is somewhat
established, I'm creating a directory called NEW into which I'll move
all uploaded files from the night before when I come in in the mornings.
Throughout the week, (1) I'll check these files to make sure they're not
corrupt, (2) segment them down into chunks if they're particularly
large, (3) replace all spaces in the filenames with _, and (4) figure
out which category they should go into. Naturally, you can make my job
easier by doing some of these things yourself when uploading, and by
emailing me with a description of what you're uploading and telling me
where it should go. We also have another request: If you know that a
program is powermac or 68x only, please add PPC or 86x into the title of
the file.

Please note! If you try to DOWNLOAD from /incoming, you may be
downloading a file that someone else is uploading! Something to be
avoided. If you are downloading from /NEW, I cannot ensure that that
file is not corrupt. Only the files under /pub will be good copies --
meaning that I managed to decompress them OK with either Stuffit
Expander 4.0 or Stuffit 4.0 itself -- which is available on the site.

Actually, it'll be about a week before I can finish verifying the files
under /pub -- I haven't done them all yet. I'll let you know. Please let
ME know if you've found a corrupt file.

Next week sometime, after everybody's had a chance to see and read the
general instructions in the README, I'll make that file a lot shorter.

Many, many thanks to those people who, when uploading, send me a
description of what it is and where it should go. Some categories, such
as sound editing tools, I know nothing about, and need to know what the
hell it is before I can classify it. The descriptive index is coming
along... I expect to begin posting part of it sometime next week.

Folks, I want you to feel free about making comments and suggestions
about the site. If you think that the categories under /pub should be
different, restructured, increased or decreased, let me know.

Future plans now include moving to a double-sided Web site sometime in
the next few weeks! The top layer will be a forum where people can post
comments, reviews and descriptions of commercial software "for
informational purposes only," and the hidden layer will be the Web
interface to the members-only site, where you can upload and download
the warez themselves and chat with other members. I do this for a
living, so it shouldn't be hard. If you have any suggestions on this
interface, let me know.

A topic of conversation: which is the best uploading format? I've heard
arguments on both sides for binhexed and macbinary files. Binhex are
bigger, but macbinary seem to be difficult for some people to decode. If
you have a definitive answer, I'd like to hear it.

Hummm... that's about it, I guess. If I forgot anything important,
forgive me. The site is still coming together. I expect things to be
much more organized by next week.

Thanks,

Shallot

P.S. By the way, sorry about last night (Weds). I had a SCSI error which
knocked a bunch of you off when uploading. It doesn't happen that often.

P.P.S. Incidentally, I have a request of my own to make: I need
Quickmail Install Disks -- whatever version you have -- as Quickmail
serial numbers are encoded into the install program itself, and I need
several serial numbers. Unless somebody knows of a hack? Anyway, upload
'em, email 'em, whatever -- I'd sure appreciate it.

NEWSLETTER #3, 6/18/96
######################

Hello, Members.

Well, two things have happened that I might have expected had I thought
about it, one more serious than the other.

The first one is: I've been squandering my precious free time playing
around with the cool stuff being uploaded rather than using that time to
work on the site. Heh. Go figure, eh? Well, anyway, I'm going to have to
make a couple disclaimers here about my continuing ability to organize
the material. Here's my latest organizational procedure:

(1) Most mornings, I take the stuff in /incoming, make sure none of it
is in the process of being uploaded, and slap it into the /NEW
directory.

(2) Throughout the week, I try to download everything in /NEW and make
sure it's complete, or at least can be decompressed. If it can't, I
delete it.

(3) If I know what an item is, whether by personal knowledge or because
somebody emailed me a description when they uploaded it, I categorize it
under /pub. If I can't place it, I file it under ?UNCLASSIFIED? until
somebody writes me & tells me what it is and/or where to place it.

(4) After I've categorized each morning's files, I run a directory/file
tree of the site and name this 00_INDEX.TXT. If you're unsure as to
whether somebody's uploaded something before, do a search of this file.

NOTE: I do NOT check files for viruses, and I do NOT install (most)
items myself, so I can't call the files under /pub actually "clean"
copies. Please, if you download a copy of something that turns out to
be worthless or dangerous, let me know. Eventually I'll set up a forum
for these types of notifications.

THE SECOND, and more serious problem, is that SOMEONE or someones have
apparently posted the username and password of this site someplace. One
guy wrote in to tell me that his brother had posted it to a BBS -- he
apologized for it -- but I suspect that more than one person has done
it, because all of a sudden I'm being deluged with requests to be on the
mailing list, as specified in the README message. "Hey, love your site,
I've been downloading all morning. Put me on the mailing list now."
Jeeeeeeze.... I primarily meant that note in the README to be directed
at people that I'd invited in, but forgot to put on the mailing list, or
put in the mailing list incorrectly. Folks, there's only two rules to
this site: (1) Don't TELL anyone else about it, and (2) UPLOAD as well
as downloading. That's not too much to ask, is it? Don't EVEN tell your
brother! We've got some stuff in the site now I've never seen anywhere
else... but I mean it, if it becomes too much of a hassle to keep
interlopers out, if someone's posting the password the very moment I
change it... I'll just shut it down and wash my hands of it. We've got
several more gigs of space free at the moment, waiting to be filled...
let's not ruin the possibilities, OK?

By the way, if you're reading this, and you didn't explicitly get
invited in by me at some point... well, you're lucky, because I put you
on the mailing list because I myself wasn't sure if you were legit or
not. I don't expect you to confess... but please obey the rules of the
site, OK?

*Sigh*... OK, I'm done venting... and the new password is "breath1"

OK, now for the fun bit: I'm in the process of setting up a Web site as
a companion to the FTP site. I hope to make the public part of it a
forum for reviews, comments, etc. of software products. Underneath will
be the secret, password-protected version of the site where members can
download and upload files, communicate with each other in several chat
areas, and search the index, right from the Web. Exciting, no? Let me
know if you have any other ideas for it. Like I said before, I do this
for a living, so if you've seen it done before, I can duplicate it. No
Java stuff, tho -- I don't have the time right now.

Some of you may have noticed that the directory structure has changed
again. Sorry. You'll find a listing of the directories along with
descriptions of them in DIR_INDEX.TXT in the main directory. Yes, yes --
descriptions of files themselves are coming soon! Sir Lurch is working
on some, and I'm working on some, and some uploaders are sending me
descriptions when they upload -- many thanks! -- and I'll be compiling
all these together... at some point... in the hopefully not-so-distant
future...

I've decided that I prefer plain stuffed files rather than binhexed
(.hqx) files as they take up less space and aren't corrupt if you upload
correctly. I've been foolishly uploading some files myself in the "raw
data" binary format through Fetch, 'cause that's how you have to upload
images to use them on the Web & I wasn't thinking. That'll trash a
compressed file pretty quickly. Anyway, suffice it to say that if you
configure Fetch to treat default binary files as MacBinary II files,
everything works out just fine. At least to me. Any contenders?

Incidentally, I hear Anarchie works even better, but haven't tried it
myself.

ON FILE NAMING: I would prefer that you use descriptive names, rather
than something like "SBC_V2.33.sit." It's much easier for me to read
"SkinnyBlond_Compiler_V2.33.sit" even though I know that's rather long
-- but it helps me figure out where to place it much, much easier. In
addition, please use underscores instead of spaces, and put PPC in the
title if you know that the item is powerpc only. Also! PLEASE put the
version in the title!

AND DON'T upload dirty pictures... although I appreciate the gesture.
But I can jump onto USENET and download however many hundreds of them I
want at a moment's notice... and they take up too much space for me to
store. Sorry, but if you upload 'em, I'm just gonna delete them. This
does not apply, however, to nude pictures of Gillian Anderson, my main
squeeze from the X-Files. A member sent me an excellent fake the other
day, and another uploaded a number of fascinating pics from the NEXT!?!
season's pilot that I do NOT know where they came from... ahem. Wiping
the drool off my chin... OK, so everybody's got a weakness...

Lesseee... what else? Of the requests currently hanging about in the
/requests directory, it would be nice if somebody could fulfill the
request for the Apple Arabic Language Kit, because the guy who wants it
has an enormous list of stuff he could upload, and it would be nice if
we could do him a favor. Also, could the person who uploaded Hexen
please do it again? I was looking forward to that, & it was a shame that
it was corrupted.

I do read all mail sent to me, but I don't usually respond to (1) upload
descriptions, and (2) suggestions/comments -- please accept my thanks,
those people who have sent so many of these to me; I do appreciate them.

Well, even if I've forgotten something, that's enough for one
newsletter. Sorry this message is so long.

Oh, yeah. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: I will be REBOOTING at 4:00 pm CST --
approximately 1 hour from sending this newsletter. I apologize in
advance for those people who will undoubtably be kicked off by this, but
it has to be done. My machine's been acting a bit flaky recently --
perhaps due to the load of illegal downloaders!

Regards,

Shallot

Whups... looks like I won't be rebooting the system at 4:00 after all.
Somebody's uploading Hexen again right now & I don't want to foul the
upload. I'll reboot in the morning, at approximately 8:30 am CST.

Incidentally, somebody just asked me, "what do we do when we run out of
files to upload?" Well, folks, don't let that stop you! Trade with
others! Download from newsgroups! Go down to your neighborhood Floppy
Joe's or similar software "rental" place for some stuff! Seek out new
avenues of opportunity! Just keep uploading to THIS site!!

End of rant...

*Double Sigh*

Ok, folks, sorry to hit you with three messages in one day, but there's
an issue that I have to address. Please don't delete or change anything
in the incoming directory that's not yours, ok? Somebody's been altering
folder names, and I've noticed other people taking it upon themselves to
delete stuff that they figured was corrupt or even "unwanted." Let me do
that, ok? I don't mind you deleting your own files in the least,
particularly if you know that they were corrupted in transit, but leave
the rest alone. Write me a letter notifying me of any errors, instead.
I'll take care of it, I promise you.

Heya --

This is just a short message to let Bad Onion members know that, as of
5:00 pm CST today, I'm changing the main password again. The username
is still "warez," the password will become "failing2"

Incidentally, if you sent me mail between yesterday afternoon and this
morning, I didn't get it, due to our mail server's spazzing out again. I
don't know if the mail bounced back or just disintegrated, but I don't
have it.

Damn, but we're still having a problem with unauthorized use of the
site. Whoever's posting the password to some bulletin board in Russia...
please stop. Whoever's trading the password on Warez IRC... please
stop. Whoever's giving the password out to Crofton Cooper (within an
hour of my last mailing!), alias "cloud999," please stop. I don't care
if he is uploading stuff. I've got to try and maintain some control
here.

I'm very, very disorganized & also busy with my regular job (for a
change) this week, but I am going to be implementing personal accounts
for each person on the mailing list very soon now. ('Very soon'... don't
I keep saying that?) This decision came about as a result of the
numerous letters of advice & support sent to me regarding my last note,
for which I am most appreciative. So anyway, guess what happens if two
people log in under the same account? Correct. This should solve most
of the unauthorized user problems.

Much thanks to the people who continue to upload. We have about 1 1/2
gigs left on the hard drive, but there's now a plan for storage when we
run out of space. Well, a secondary plan. I've actually got another
fast & wide external 4 gig hard drive sitting on my shelf, but I don't
have a fast & wide adapter handy to hook it up with. Well, anyway,
unless I find an adapter skipping through the woods sometime soon, the
plan is to burn some of the older warez onto CDs, & then mount the CDs
on the CD drive according to a schedule which I'll post on the Web site
(when it gets built). So we'll have virtually unlimited upload space.

That's about all for this week.

Hello, members. This is Bad Onion Newsletter #5. If you believe that
you're receiving this message in error, please send me return email &
I'll take you off the mailing list.

Many apologies about the poor response to my emails recently, but I'm
afraid I'm behind on just about everything at the moment. My in box has
been piling up, the NEW directory has been piling up... *sigh*. Well,
maybe I'll get caught up this weekend. I am receiving and attempting to
read all emails sent to me -- and I particularly appreciate the upload
descriptions -- but I haven't been responding particularly well lately.
In the free time that I have in and around my Real(tm) job, I can either
(1) Respond to my email, (2) Organize the NEW directory, (3) Work on the
upcoming Warez Web site, or (4) Play Dark Forces. Guess which I've been
doing lately? Correct; I'm up to level 15 or so.

Sorry about access to the server being cut off again Sat. afternoon
through Sun. morning, but Netcom's service went down in Texas again.
Bastards.

Ummm.. that's really all I have to say this week, due to my current
nonproductivity. Although I do have a couple requests to make for
myself:

I'm looking for a program called SmartForms. I'm also trying to fulfill
a request for a coworker, for (cough choke) a PC program (gag) called
Lightwave 3D. If anybody knows how I could get a copy of this, give me
a holler.

Please continue to send comments, suggestions, etc. my way. I'll get
caught up soon, I promise.

Thanks,

Shallot

#####################
NEWSLETTER #6, 7/5/96
#####################

Well, the main news is that the Web site is up, due to a burst of
unprecedented energy from me. All it's got at the moment is a chat
board, but feel free to use it. 20 messages at a time appear on the
board. Please don't bother posting requests here at the moment, as they
will be swept off the bottom of the board as people use it. I'll be
putting a request board up on the Web soon.

http://205.187.161.4/
Username: warez
Password: count3

And, as of this afternoon at about 5:00 pm CST or so, I'm changing the
main ftp password to "count3" as well.

Everything else is still in disrepair at the moment. Thanks to all who
have been continuing to upload despite the mess. Thanks to everyone for
continuing to keep this site a secret -- although there's still somebody
leaking it out there somewhere. Again, PLEASE don't tell anyone about
the site -- you want to invite somebody else aboard? You're welcome to
sponsor them. Tell them to email a list to me, and then email me
yourself with their name/handle and email address. I'll strongly
consider letting them in. But I'm not accepting any more unsponsored
members.

Ummm... that's about it, at the moment. Anyone found the program
SmartForms for me yet? I haven't had any nibbles. I'm also still looking
for a copy of the (PC) program Lightwave 3D -- version 5; someone has
offered me version 4.

Well, individualized passwords are coming as soon as I can whip them up.
Some asshole wiped the /incoming directory clean sometime yesterday and
we lost everything in it. If you uploaded during the last four days, you
probably will have to upload again. Damn, but this pisses me off.

Aside from that, not much is going on right now, except for the fact
that I'm thinking seriously about shutting the BO down for a while. I
keep hearing rumors of the password being given out... I may shut down
in the next couple days, until I can get organized enough to prevent
future security problems.

Hello,

Ok, The Bad Onion is officially offline for a couple days, until I can
create individual accounts & mail them out to you. I'm also going to
attempt to clean up the NEW directory and maybe make a stab at putting
up some sort of index... but mainly, I want to get these individual
accounts going so that we can eliminate some security problems.

You should be receiving email from me in the next few days about your
individual password.

NEWSLETTER #9, 7/24/96

Howdy, folks --

Just a couple notes for this week on some things that I want to make
clear:

Thanks to all who have been sending me descriptions/category placement
instructions for their uploads. As for the files in /NEW, I didn't mean
to suggest in the last newsletter that I didn't know where ALL of the
current files in there went; quite a few of them I just haven't gotten
around to filing yet. However, many thanks to those people who went out
of their way to give me a summary of the contents of that directory.
Thanks, as well, to those people who take the time to notify me of (1)
Outdated files, (2) Duplicate files, (3) Corrupted files, (4) Infected
files, (5) Misfiled files, (6) Shareware files, and (6) Useless files.
I fix these problems as soon as I'm alerted to them.

If you've been having problems downloading the segmented files on the
site, I suggest you download the latest version of stuffit expander.
That seems to solve a number of problems that people seem to be having
with being unable to join segmented files.

Please don't feel offended if I don't get back to your emails right
away. I'm working like a dog nowadays to keep up with both the site
management and my Real Job(tm) nowadays. In my spare time (ha!), I'm
still trying to compile an index of the site's files, and work on the
Web site. And please note that I usually don't respond back to emails on
upload descriptions -- but I do appreciate them!

I've reorganized the categories structures (yes, again!) because we've
still been getting an awful lot of duplicate uploads, and I wanted
people to be able to find their way around a little easier because of
this. So the /pub/utilities directory has been abolished, and all the
subdirectories that were in there have been moved into /pub. This makes
the /pub directory listing quite a bit longer than it was, but if you
don't like it... tough. Any other suggestions, send them along.

Again, I've told quite a number of people that the site is down for
good, so please don't even MENTION the site to your little brother, if
you know that he's in the habit of going on IRC and gabbing about what
his older sibling's been doing lately. And if somebody asks you about
the site -- tell them it's down for good.

If you want to contribute to either the web site or the ftp site in ways
other than uploading, let me know.

Regards,

Shallot

NEWSLETTER #10, 8/6/96

Hello, Bad Onion Members --

Damn, but it's been a long time since my last newsletter. I'm still
working like a dog at my Real Job on several high-priority projects,
and just have not been able to do hardly anything with the site, much
less implement those individual accounts that I keep promising. Well,
anyway, the newest general password is given at the bottom of this
letter. I know that it's time to change the password when I start
getting email like this:

>
>Date: Thu, 1 Aug 1996 14:11:27 -0500 (CDT)
>From: Christopher Ryan Fowler <rf@nfinity.com>
>
>I'm currently accessing your Bad Onion warez
site, and I'd appreciate getting your >newletter regularly with password
updates.
>
>Thanks in advance.
>

So, obviously there's still a security hole somewhere; someone is giving
out the site password, which really pisses me off. Well, anyway...

On a more amusing note, the other day I discovered that a group of
traders were logging into the anonymous ftp account on my server and had
set up a "secret" trading directory (they'd created two directories
called "." and "..") which they were rapidly pumping warez into. They
must've been doing it for a couple weeks. And here I am wondering why my
remaining disk space is shrinking so rapidly... d'oh. Fortunately, one
of the Bad Onion members tipped me off, and I shut down the anonymous
account and siphoned their warez over into our /NEW directory... heh heh
heh. Not a bad little bonus. Anyway, that's undoubtedly the reason why
access may have seemed a bit slow recently, and hopefully it should be
much better now.

I appreciate the notes and descriptions ya'll have been sending me when
you upload files. I promise, they're not in vain; I do intend to use
them to create a site description database, one of these days when I
have Free Time again. In the meantime, Sir Lurch has compiled a index
of all the files that he has personal knowledge about, and has asked me
to send it as an attachment to this newsletter. It's far from complete,
and I have unfortunately redone the directory structure since he wrote
it (sorry, Sir Lurch!) but it contains some good information.

I also appreciate it when people tell me when I've got duplicate or
superflous (or corrupt!) files laying around. For instance, I haven't
the faintest idea whether all those MacTen program in the
"emulators/UNIX" directory need to be there. We're currently about 85%
percent capacity on the 4-Gig drive that I keep the site on, so I would
like to trim off anything at all that's not really necessary. I also
regret that I can no longer accept archive-type collections of fonts,
images, clipart, etc. on the site, but I really don't have the room. I
may have access to another drive in the future, but it's not possible at
the moment.

I think that there were other things I was going to mention here, but I
can't think of them. Oh well, I'll just send an update as usual if
they're important. Sorry folks, but I've been pretty tired lately.

Oh, of course. The new password. (D'oh!)

NEWSLETTER #11, 8/15/96
#######################

Aaaarrrggh... this has been a frustrating week.

Well, that's all I'm going to say about that. Except.... it appears
that somehow the Bad Onion's password leaked out onto Usenet sometime
recently. Damn, damn, damn. Well, I still haven't finished the
individualized passwords (yes, they are long overdue -- I STILL haven't
found the time) so I suppose I can only blame myself. The new general
password is at the bottom of this newsletter as usual.

Ok! A couple of alerts: the file system is currently 96% full, so if
somebody gets it into his/her head to upload "The Alltime Greatest
Collection of Fonts From the Eighties," it's gonna fill up and all sorts
of alarms are going to go off. So don't upload anything humongous over
the weekend. Particularly since I'm gonna be out of town from now until
Monday. I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but "must-have"
software is about the only thing you want to upload at this time. We
can take a couple hundred more megs, so don't worry about that -- if
Photoshop 4.0 or the like suddenly comes out and you get a copy, do
upload it, please! (Incidentally, thanks for Infini-D 3.5, InTheChips!)

However, for some reason I see people currently uploading.... Metatools
such as Bryce 2 and Power Tools, which are all in the /pub/MetaTools
directory already... Playboy's Nudes Vol. 1, which is in the
screensavers/After_Dark directory and which people KEEP on uploading for
some reason; I've had to delete it at least 5 times... and what appears
to be some MORE fonts collections... *sigh*.

Well folks, I appreciate your enthusiasm at any rate. I am trying to
get more storage space... it looks like I'm going to just have to divide
parts of the site up to burn on CDs and then mount various CDs during
various days of the week. Unless anyone out there has an extra hard
drive for an SGI just laying around... :_) I thought I was going to be
able to hook up another 4-Gig this week, but that fell through,
unfortunately -- that resource got reallocated to somebody else. I guess
my boss doesn't consider Warez storage to be a primary concern...

Speaking of which, a couple of people have asked me about possibly
acquiring some CDs of the site. You might not think that would be such
a big deal, as I have a CD-burner sitting right here on my desk, but I
tell you what: the site's going to take about 5 CDs worth of space,
which is a lot of burning hours for me. Particularly since I would have
to do it like this: transfer some files to my Mac for burning, burn
'em, delete 'em, transfer some more files, repeat numerous times. So,
here's the deal: anyone who wants to call up a CD-R reseller and pay
them to ship me 10 blank, 650Mg CDs -- 5 for you, 5 for me -- I'll burn
the entire site for you and ship 'em back to you at my own cost. That
seems to be the simplest and fairest solution.

And the site is getting cleaner now, too, since a few people are
graciously helping me rename files, delete duplicate and corrupt files,
work on the file descriptions database, etc. Obviously I wasn't taking
care of this too well myself, so it's good to have the help.

Incidentally, does ANYBODY know where I can get a bootleg copy of
Filemaker Pro Server 3.0 for the <choke> PC? This is something that I'd
really like to obtain (for a coworker, actually), but I haven't even
gotten any nibbles so far. I'm afraid I'm rather helpless when it comes
to acquiring PC warez.

My apologies if you've sent me email asking a question or something and
I haven't answered it. I've been rather bad at returning email recently.
If you really want to know something, just keep resending the message
until I finally answer. It's the best way to get my attention.

I guess that's about it for this week. Thank you for your support.

Man, doesn't it suck that Netscum's filtering the binaries out of the
Warez newsgroups now? Those bastards... well, anyway... here's the new

NEWSLETTER #12, 8/23/96
#######################

Hello, Members --

Ok, password change time again. It's at the bottom of this newsletter as
usual.

I've taken just a smidgen of Free Time to do some quick & dirty
cleaning on the site, & managed to eliminate about 10% worth of drive
space. So the /incoming directory is open again, and we have about 400
Megs to play with. In the process, I went ahead and deleted the System
7.5.3 installation package, which some people were saying was corrupt,
anyway, but most of the other files I deleted were just duplicates --
many thanks to those people who wrote me & let me know about ones they
spotted.

A couple of questions: Can somebody please check the pub/emulators/UNIX
directory and tell me which, if any, of the MachTen files can be
deleted? There's an awful lot of space being taken up there.

Also, in the pub/desktop_publishing directory, what Quark files are
useful? Which should be deleted?

I've written a quickie program to index the site and store all filenames
with their corresponding sizes in a tab-delimited file called
00_INDEX.DAT in the root directory, suitable for importing into a
Filemaker database or the like. It's not the database I eventually want
to have, with descriptions & other useful info, but it'll do for now.

My apologies, again, to all who have written me & haven't received a
response. I've been rather deluged with email recently. The response to
my warez CD offer was much more emphatic than I expected. So here's the
current situation with that:

First of all, I made a silly calculation mistake. Obviously, if one CD-R
holds 650 megs, and the site currently holds 4 gigs, or 4000 megs of
data, then it will take 6 CDs to hold the site, not 4 (650 * 6 = 3900
megs). So my offer stands as follows: You need to arrange with some
reseller to send me anywhere from 1-6 CDs for me to burn a portion of
the site onto. Also have them send me an equal amount of CDs for myself
for my time and trouble. No, I don't want you sending me money instead.
In other words, you can send me 6 CDs and I'll burn 3 for you, or you
can send me the full 12 CDs and I'll burn 6 for you, etc. Send me an
email & let me know they're coming -- you might list an order number if
they give you one -- and let me know what you want burned onto them.
Please don't give me an enormous list! Something like "The pub/games
directory, the pub/MetaTools directory, and all of the emulators
directory except the MachTen stuff" would be ok. Use the 00_INDEX.DAT
database, if you like, to look up your files' sizes and check to make
sure you aren't going over the total amount of space required.

And then I'll send you back an email telling you approximately how long
it will be 'till I can burn your CDs and send them to you. Sound simple
enough? If you don't know a CD-R reseller, search for one on the Web or
something; I don't really know of a good one. The reason I want CD-Rs as
payment instead of cash is that CD-Rs are getting increasingly difficult
to find, as demand is extremely high right now, and the prices are
rising rapidly. They're somewhere between 8-9 dollars now, when you can
find them at all.

Oh, and I want to wait a couple more weeks before I begin doing this.
There's a couple people helping me rename files, move them around, and
basically clean up the site right now, and I'd like to wait until that
is finished before I begin committing the site to CD. So I'll send out
my address in a future newsletter, when I'm ready for them.

Well, I guess that's about all for this week... here's the new password:

NEWSLETTER #13, 8/29/96
#######################

Ooohhh... unlucky #13.

Actually, it may be #12 which was unlucky. Looks like I accidentally
sent that newsletter to not only my "active" members, such as you all,
but also the "inactive" members, which are members that I deactivated
because they were deadwood, obnoxious, leaked the password, or had email
addresses that went bad. Ever had one of those days? I'm having one of
those months...

So it's not surprising that the password leaked out quickly this time. I
was wondering why access has been so slow recently, but I didn't clue in
until I started getting bombarded with emails saying "Cool site! Put me
on the mailing list!" Arrghh.

No new developments on either the Web site or the FTP site at the
moment. A couple people are still busy helping me clean & rename files,
so I'm not quite ready to accept CD-Rs for burning just yet. Thanx to
those who have written in alerting me of filename screwups, duplicate
files, corrupt files, etc. Please, continue to do this! It really helps.

I'm a little hesitant about the Newton stuff people have been uploading
recently. I don't mind hosting Powerbook stuff, but Newton? I dunno...
just a warning to those of you who use Newtons; if you want any of the
Newton stuff that has been uploaded recently, now's the time to grab it.

But on the positive side, even with recent uploads, disk space is
remaining steady at 88% full. Upload at will! We've got about 400 Megs
of space free to play with.

Thanx to all those people who have offered to help in some way with
either of the sites. I may not have taken you up on your offer yet, but
I probably will at some point.
